Our team has constructed six new border stations along the U.S./Canadian border over the past twenty years. Serving both government agents and civilian travelers, border stations pose a unique construction challenge. These facilities must combine attractive architectural and land-use elements with functional office space and comfortable living quarters in addition to providing specialized security and communication requirements including detention components such as interview and processing rooms and holding cells for detainees. Much like police stations, courthouses, and correctional facilities, border stations must be designed for immediate occupancy after a seismic event or other adverse conditions. With construction performed under strict seismic, noise control, occupancy, and security concerns, these specialized facilities require an extremely high level of cooperation between all parties during construction.
