BTC Agent's Office and Toll Plaza

BTC Toll Plaza

Art Anderson Associates provided space programming, architectural and engineering design and construction support services for new elements of the Bremerton Transportation Center intermodal transit facility. Our services included design for the approximately 1,200sf Washington State Ferries Agent's Office building, 1,440sf fare collection/toll booth plaza and accompanying vehicle canopy. The new office and canopy required designs that are compatible with the surrounding municipal developments and the specific needs of Washington State Ferries.

BTC Agent's OfficeOur firm's detailed scope of services included preliminary and final plans, specifications and cost estimates for architectural, civil, structural, electrical and mechanical elements of both the office building, toll booths and the canopy which covers the booths. We provided design quality assurance/quality control and ensured proper integration with other related improvements. We also provided construction support services, including RFI responses, shop drawing/submittal review, as-built drawings and project closeout services.

The new agent's office and toll plaza were two elements in a larger redevelopment of the Pacific Avenue/ferry terminal area. The primary driver of the redevelopment was the construction of a federally-funded vehicle tunnel, which directs exiting ferry traffic under much of the city's downtown core, mitigating the congestion associated with the ferry offloading all its vehicles at once. The construction of the tunnel provided new opportunities to reconfigure the topside to provide better use of the space. For instance, the reconfigured toll plaza will now be able to accommodate oversize vehicles in all lanes. In addition to the agent's office and toll plaza, the tunnel redevelopment included a new public park and streetscape improvements.

The agent's office building was located directly over the tunnel entrance, and thus our team coordinated our design extensively with the design of the tunnel, streetscape and auto holding area. Construction was phased to allow the ferry terminal and transportation center to remain open throughout the project. Our consideration for peak pedestrian, auto, bus and taxi service were considered in the project phasing plan.
